A participatory public sound art project exploring identity and what lives beneath the surface.
Start here: Listen to the 2-min soundscape
After listening: Take a moment to reflect and share
Explore what others have shared…
“Batman to be honest”
“I am confident, goofy, cozy, serious and determined”
“loss”
I have always preferred to move through cities along. I can take my time, stop, look, listen. When no one is watching I am allowed to be my most curious. Convinced of connection to something bigger. Less terrified of the unknown. There are so many millions of streets to traverse and so many ways to be delightfully unseen.
I’m no one. And everyone. Could be anyone. But when no one is watching I’m honestly hoping to be my unapologetic self. Rustic. Real self. Which I’m fighting for every single day. It’s a war within, from a cage within.
“I’m still kind 🤍”
“Giddy with joy, with the birds to share in my ecstasy”
“I’m a furry! My fursona is Garfield”
“When no one else is watching im relaxed and in control in what im doing. Feel more free. As im uninterrupted. I enjoy this time.”
“Cocaine….”
“I am a silly child that has the adult money and responsibility to do whatever I wanted when I was younger, and am using that ability. I don’t know whether I want those things that I’m doing anymore, but I feel like I owe it myself to make up for lost time.”
“Broken and empty, a lump of pain just waiting for relief”
“I'm scared of myself and how much of me is made up for me by others I love, and how much I play along to please them.”
“Well I try and be good. Nice, thoughtful. A history guy. But sometimes I say the wrong thing. Say rude things. Treat myself woth disrespectful attitudes. Im in a transition phase, work, relationship and college. I know I only get one chance but its scary. I guess. Im sad when no one's looking. But when I need to perform I show my hubris. My attitude and use my words”
About unmasked
Unmasked is a participatory public art experiment exploring identity, self-perception, and what lives beneath the ways we show up in the world.
Through sound and reflection, it invites a simple question:
Who are you when no one else is watching?
